To get the most benefit from the water filter built into your refrigerator (on refrigerator models that include water filtration for icemakers and/or chilled water dispensers), you should change the water filter cartridge on a regular basis. Most manufacturers recommend that you change your refrigerator water filter every six months in typical conditions. Some brands may recommend more frequent replacement of filter cartridges for heavier use. This insures that the filter is doing its best to remove chemicals, particulates and bacteria, along with any off tastes, from your ice and chilled drinking water.

Changing your refrigerator water filter is easy. All refrigerator water filter cartridges include easy to follow installation instructions. You can find the correct model number/part number for the water filter cartridge for your brand and model refrigerator by looking in the instruction manual that came with your refrigerator. Be sure to purchase the correct brand and model filter cartridge for your refrigerator.

In general, most refrigerator water filters are easy to remove. A quarter-turn to the left is all that is needed to unlock most filters. The old filter cartridge can be removed from the water filter housing. Then, the new filter cartridge can be inserted into position in the water filter housing. A quarter-turn to the right will lock the new filter cartridge into the filter housing.

Be sure to flush two or more gallons of water through the new filter as soon as it is installed and discard that water.
